People considering starting up a business in the Hastings region are set to benefit from a new partnership between the NSW Business Chamber, Port Macquarie Hastings Council and North Coast TAFE.

The program is designed to build on the success of the Key Business Development Program that the Port Macquarie Hastings Council has run for the past two years. That program is based on the highly successful Economic Gardeners methodology. It targets businesses aiming for substantial growth and has been heavily supported, with a new group to start in 2009.

The new STARTUP Business Development Program uses mentors to assist aspiring business operators gain the skills needed for success, especially in their first year of operation. Many start-up businesses fail, often due to a lack of essential business knowledge or skills that, had it been available to aspiring entrepreneurs, may have assured survival and growth.

This STARTUP program is free to the participants, but calls for their hard work and passion for their aspiration. Grant Burtenshaw, the facilitator of the program, says that one of the biggest challenges is recruitment of mentors.

“We already have our first clients who are keen to use the program,” says Mr Burtenshaw, “so we are looking for community members who have sound business experience and knowledge and are keen to contribute by assisting aspiring business owners in attaining dreams.”

“If this program proves as successful as the partners believe it should it is intended to expand it to other parts of our region,” Mr Burtenshaw adds.
